Heavy rains and flash floods in Northern and Central Kerala had lead to destruction with rivers overflowing, sweeping away houses, washing away roads and bridges. Seems like there is no end to flood-hit Kerala’s nightmare. The rains and floods in the state have left 29 people dead and nearly 54,000 people homeless. They were evacuated and shifted to camps.
In the midst of disaster, a heartwarming video of a rescue effort has gone viral on social media. In the video, a heroic effort of a rescuer was caught on camera in which a man is seen running across a bridge with a child in his hands minutes before the Cheruthoni bridge went under water.
The video was captured by News18 Kerala after the fifth shutter of the Idukki dam was opened and the reservoir’s water was released into the Cheruthoni river. According to the reports, the police officer who ran across the bridge in the nick of time managed to save the child and is now being called as a hero online.
The bridge is currently submerged under water. As the water level reached an alarming level, the shutters of the Idukki dam were opened for the first time in 26 years. With all the five floodgates of the Idukki dam opened, water is rushing down the Periyar River causing huge loss of crops and properties. And the worst affected city is the Cheruthoni town located close to the dam.
The army was deployed in the worst-affected districts of Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur.
