Offering 'Naivedyam' to the Deity in a temple and receiving 'Prasaad' as the blessing is the very common known ritual at a Temple. The give and take-relationship between God and Man are made sacred with these exchanges. Symbolising the innumerable prayers we offer and a few of them coming true, this exchange exists worldwide in many faiths. In one such a situation where many devotees have attended a Foundation Ceremony of a Temple in Karnataka, deaths have happened.
A temple in the Sulivadi Village of the Chamrajnagar area in Karnataka named 'Kichu Maranda Temple' had its foundation ceremony where over a hundred devotees have come to attend. After the whole ceremony had finished, the 'Prasaadam' was offered to the devotees.
The Devotees were sensing a smell similar to 'Kerosene' from the Prasaadam while they were eating. When asked about it, the temple authorities present there said that it was a special leaf used in the making. Still doubtful about it, the innocent people had consumed it. Within minutes all of them were experiencing stomach aches and vomitings.
The symptoms were so severe that all of them were rushed to a nearby hospital. Some of them whose condition was grave were sent to a bigger hospital in Mysuru district. 14 were reported dead and 90 are under treatment. The Police and the district authorities have been immediately informed. Two people were taken into custody.
District officials have responded well and collected samples and have sent them to a Regional Forensic lab. The concerned district's minister, C Puttaranagashetty quotes the health department officials. In their analysis and in his words, and as per the symptoms which were shown by the victims, the officials have suggested a "pesticide contamination of the 'prasaadam',".
Crows and other birds which have also consumed this offering have also died. 80 was their death toll. The Superintendent of Police, Chamrajnagar, Singh Meena has revealed that five people were detained. Three of which were the Temple Administrators and Two were Suspects of the crime.
The main cause and reason for poisoning the offering are still unknown of. the villagers claim that the dispute between factions in the village over the authority of the Temple has caused this. To which the SP, had said that the Police are on their duty of "investigating in all angles", before drawing a conclusion.
No charges were booked yet, as they are still under review. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Kumaraswamy had extended his support by saying, "I came to know about this while I was returning from Belagavi. At first, I did not realise how serious it was. Our MLA, Puttaraju, went to the spot. There are reports that the food was deliberately poisoned. It is being tested. Action will be taken against whoever is behind this inhuman act".
This might be another example of people fighting over differences in faith. They are fighting for authority over faith and resulting in deaths of innocents.
