Years after we've got to celebrate our independence day, the idea of untouchability, racism and other such terms that once had prevailed in the air of India sounds so disgusting that we start looking down on the predator itself. IIT-M has recently gone through the same. The institution had decided to separate the paths of vegetarians and non-vegetarians into the canteen. The entry/exit was made differently, washbasins were separated, and vegetarians and non-vegetarians were supposed to eat without mixing with each other.
"Upper-caste households in India would usually have two entrances, one for the upper castes, the other one in the back for the ‘impure’ lower castes mess in IIT Madras is now having the same system," claimed a person in a Facebook group. "This mess has separate entrances for vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Not just that, separate wash basins and separate utensils as well. What started as a demand for ‘pure’ vegetarian mess has become full-fledged untouchability. IIT Madras is trying to become a world-class institute, but the culture inside is still regressive in many aspects!”
The decision was taken after demands and requests for pure vegetarian food in the mess and some students wanted that to happen but the decision taken by the institution was surely unanticipated. The action has got no mixed reactions but only rage and criticism. A student who studies there and demanded not to be identified said, "We understand if there are separate counters for vegetarian and non-vegetarian food but it is shocking to see separate entrances to the same dining hall and even separate wash basins for vegetarians and non-vegetarians. We are not aware as to when the entrances and wash basins were separated. This came to our notice only on Thursday afternoon.”
Following an extreme rage and criticisms, the institution has now taken back the decision and pulled down the posters. As per India Times, an letter has been sent by the Hostel Affairs Secretary to the students apologising for the matter. The mail reads, "It has been brought to our attention that a certain poster detailing an area of wash basin to be earmarked for vegetarian students was found in RRC mess, Himalaya hostel. The caterer has been instructed to remove the poster immediately."
