It is said and believed that law is equal for anyone and everyone but seems like the country is working on George Orwell's principle that says 'all are equal but some are more equal than others.' The chief minister of Maharashtra Mr Devendra Fadnavis has broken laws and paid nothing for them. As per India Today, the minister's vehicles -MH01 CP 0037 and MH01 CP 0038 have violated traffic rules at and around Bandra Worli Sea Link for a total of 13 times this year.
Being the chief minister, he could easily escape fine and punishment for breaking traffic rules and he did so. Shakeel Ahmed, an RTI activist said, "I had sought an information from the traffic department as to what happened to the e-challans that were issued to chief minister's vehicles or if there is any GR [government rule] which exempts CM and ministers' convoys as far the traffic rules are concerned. The traffic department said that all the 13 e-challans have been cancelled."
The minister has his roots to Bharatiya Janata Party and complaint against anyone from the opposition is definitely a matter to speak on, for other party leaders. Going with the flow, spokesperson of Nationalist Congress Party has spoken on the matter and said, "If there is a law it has to be equal. The CM cannot be treated separately for over speeding. On the one hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that he wants to end VVIP culture, but his own party leaders do not seem to be following what the PM preaches."
Why the CM was always exempted for so long and till now still remains a question. If laws are equal for us all, why some ministers are being treated differently in the eyes of law? As per the Mumbai Traffic Police, "Traffic challans are auto-generated through deployed speed cameras. Convoy vehicles of the CM are exempted from speed limits due to security threat perception."
