Mahatma Gandhi is an epitome of inspiration to activism that could lead a country to its Freedom. His policies of non-cooperation and civil disobedience with truth and peace had inspired many movements across the world. Idolising his contribution, the University of Ghana, in Accra, Ghana, Africa had earlier erected his Statue in the middle of the campus. Later, the students and teachers alike demanded its removal, stating Gandhi to be "racist".
The University of Ghana is a public university, a very prestigious one, took this decision after protests and dissents from everyone in the campus. The statue was thus removed overnight on the Aegon Campus of the University. Placing it in any other place to not attract much attention, but still, consider his contribution is under scrutiny.
The protesters argue saying that Gandhi had considered Africans to be "Inferior" and was biased against them. In his letters, he had written in 1904, he was addressing to the Africans as "Uncivilised" indirectly. The statue was erected in the year 2015, but protests have erupted from the past two years. Space is now an empty, stump.
The derogatory comments made by Mahatma Gandhi regards the Africans was severely condemned. They demanded it to be replaced by African Freedom Fighters and other native prominent persons. Putting in mind his contributions, and the friendly ties with Indian Country, the Ghanian Government is looking for options.
In history, they pointed out to instances where Gandhi had complained that Indians were being forced to use the same entrances as Africans, where the British put them at an equal level. To this Gandhi was quoted saying, "their civilised habits … would be degraded to the habits of aboriginal natives".
In another instance, he wrote a letter saying, "About the mixing of the Kaffirs with the Indians, I must confess I feel most strongly". The protesters have nothing personal against, Gandhi as he said these statements at that point of time in the history. But, they confess feeling constantly "Inferior" replaying his statements in their minds.
The Naysayers are stated saying that the removal of the statue was an issue of self-respect of the Africans. One of them was reported saying, "If we show that we have no respect for ourselves and look down on our own heroes and praise others who had no respect for us, then there is an issue". They wanted no place for any self-doubt but wanted to highlight the victory of Africans.
