Mumbai’s Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital in Andheri, Mumbai that is run by the state government caught fire at 4 pm on 17 December, Monday. Over 140 people are injured in the accident and a six months old girl is dead. A woman was being rescued fell on the ground along with the rescuer from a crane.
Deceased Persons are kept in Cooper Hospital, Holy Spirit Hospital, Seven Hills hospital, and Shatabdi hospital. Reportedly, there was a short circuit in a window AC unit on the ground floor that caused the fire. An old employee and a male nurse in the hospital, Mr Kailash Dayal said, " My duty had just finished before 4 pm. Since I live in the staff quarters behind the hospital, I came running back hearing screams.”
An official told NDTV that the hospital had failed a security check a fortnight ago. "The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is responsible for the fire audits, whether they carried out fire audits or not, that will be investigated," Mumbai Mayor V Mahadeshwar told ANI.
A firefighter officer told TOI, " The ground floor had stacks of rubber rolls, which are combustible material. This is likely to have aided the fire, presumably triggered by a short circuit. The fire then shot upwards through an open fire duct. The fourth floor of the hospital was affected the most as smoke got lodged there for the most as smoke got lodged there for the longest duration.”
“Construction work has been underway on the hospital premise s for a new wing since 2009. We had provided a provisional NOC, but not a final one. The building doesn’t even have an occupation certificate,” Deputy chief fire officer, MIDC, VM Ogale claimed. 140 people have been rescued till now, and 8 are dead -including a six months old infant.
