Shot in a beautiful and divine place like Uttarakhand, the film called Kedarnath was released on 7th December, Friday. This Abhishek Kapoor directorial film is a love story that revolves around religion and differences. The movie also showcases the cruel 2013 floods that caused havoc in the Kedarnath town and areas nearby in Uttarakhand.
The movie has been given a U/A certificate and depicts nothing in a bad light, still has been banned in seven districts of Uttarakhand. The ban happened after heavy protests against the film. Some people have stood against the Sushant Singh Rajput starrer film for it depicts a love story of a Hindu girl who falls in love with a Muslim boy. They have accused the film of promoting love-jihad to its viewers. Love-Jihad is basically a term concerned with the idea of some Muslim communities where men from their religion marry women of non-muslim religion to convert their them into one.
Accused of promoting love-jihad, the film is banned in seven districts of Uttarakhand, namely, Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Pauri, Tehri, and Almora. The director Abhishek Kapoor is quite upset with the ban has taken the matter in open. "This very upsetting. How can they do this? When the government has cleared it, the whole country is watching it, how can they stop my film? Uttarakhand is an integral part of the country. What happens to my freedom of expression" says the director.
After the director criticizing the move openly, Indian actress Swara Bhaskar who is popular for breaking the silence on such concerns also criticized the ban. "Sad and shameful that our filmmakers & producers who pay such heavy taxes on the films their make; are rendered vulnerable to all kinds of arbitrary ‘hurt sentiments’ and random bigotry... sometimes by elected govt.s. Democracy? A free country? Anyone???" the actress remarked.
