A resident of Sector-12, Noida, has claimed that he has been robbed of Rs 6.8 lakhs via UPI app. The amount was being transferred from his SBI account for two months, and he got to know only when he went to an ATM to withdraw some money. He didn't either receive any messages regarding the transfer of his money from the bank.
“It was on December 4 when I visited an ATM to withdraw some money, I found out the fraud. I then went to my bank branch in sector 2, only to learn that the money was transferred seven times from my account since September 29,” says the victim. He has filed a complaint at Sector 20 police station where a cyber cell has also been involved.
The victim says that he does not own a smartphone, nor did ever shared any password or OTP with anyone. He was confused and in shock when he reached the ATM and found out that he was robbed because never did he receive any SMS regarding the transfer of his money.
According to police who are involved in the investigation, the robbery took place via UPI payment mechanism. Accessing the victim's UPI account was not a hard task according to sources, for the existing security is not enough to protect from such frauds.
This is the second such case that happened this year. Recently, a Pune man had lost 93.5 lakh rupees when he had got a call, claiming to be an Airtel employee. The caller had warned that the man could get his SIM card blocked if he did not share his details. The victim who had the least idea of such scams gave his details that resulted in the robbery of 93.5 lakhs from his account, as the SIM card was linked to his bank account as well.
