On the complaints against NRIs who have forgotten their wives (and children) who live in India and have not taken care of or tried to contact them, the government has made an influential decision. Ministry of Women & Child Development said on Wednesday that the passports of 33 non-resident Indians or NRIs have been revoked. The action has taken place after numerous complaints from WCD Ministry.
The Ministry issued a tweet on December 11, Tuesday claiming, " The WCD (Ministry of Women and Child Development) and NCW (National Commission for Women) are taking every possible step to protect women in NRI marriages. We serve as a nodal point of contact for grievances received from women on the dedicated email address [email protected] and coordinate the redressal system."
"The problem of women being abandoned in NRI marriages is a serious issue. For the first time, WCD Ministry, Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs are providing coordinated support to women facing problems in their marriage to NRIs," they wrote in another tweet they issued on the same day.
The Integrated Nodal Agency (INA) has been involved in the matter and has issued 8 LOCs (Look Out Circulars) till now. Followed by 8 LOCs, the case has witnessed much more as the Ministry of External Affairs has cancelled 33 passports of such people till now. The numbers might increase anytime soon.
With such actions initiated by the government NRIs who have abandoned wives in India and are living abroad might get difficulties coming back to their own country. Reportedly, the government has demanded statements from the accused NRIs; and if they do not respond or give their statements within a week they will have to pay a heavy fine. As per WCD Ministry, Cabinet will be proposed to approve a detailed proposal of the case that shall be presented before them within a week.
