Budding Researchers of the IIT Kharagpur, have collectively developed a decision support system to detect Interstitial Lung Diseases and other Malignant Lung Tissue damages. Basically, Lung Cancer. This disease does not have a high-risk group. Men and Women of any age can be affected. Case studies have been taken up from India and Foreign for their research.
The lead Researcher, Sudipta Mukhopadhyay, gave us more information about the risks of getting treatment for Lung Cancer. "Biopsy especially in the lungs is a critical process, hence conducted only after initial medical analysis, which is done by expert radiologists".
Talking about this new system researchers say, "The developed system uses non-invasive and comparatively affordable methods of image analysis that would aid the radiologists to identify malignancy by reading growth in the lung nodules. The patterns of the Interstitial Lung Disease can also be detected".
Cancer is of two types, the Malignant type can spread to other parts of the body, damaging organs. The systems detect the cancerous tissues, studying their patterns in comparison to the present data and retrieve the information on chances.
Another researcher, Shrikant Mehre, has added, "The novelty of the system lies in its India-centric reference point i.e. the medical image scan database used for reference is sought from the Indian patient population". The biopsy cases were primarily taken from PGIMER.
The system can never replace the expert Radiologist diagnosis. It would just help them better to understand the malignancy. All these systems tried and checked, have only an aiding role, but not the sole dependency.
Putting the system to test, a fellow researcher had this to say, " "We have successfully tested both software systems at AIIMS Delhi. Ashu Seith Bhalla and her team provided the neutral test site required for the validation. Currently, our success rate is higher than 80% in identifying both cases. We are working towards further improvements in order to conduct clinical trials on bigger sample sizes".
The budding Radiologists and the newly practising specialists can now have a better understanding of the cases they would be facing, by using this system and the database of several case studies.
