Obesity is the one that runs when we do not run for exercise. It is defined as a medical condition, where excess fat is being stored in our bodies, to an extent of having a negative effect on our health. Changes in the diet and lack of physical activity both in the Developed and the Developing nations has resulted in Childhood Obesity as well. China tops the list with the most number of Obese children. India is at the second position with 14.4 million obese children.
In a serious attempt to curb the physical health issue, the West Bengal Government has come up with awareness programs. Since the matter in light is the obesity of Children, they have started off with Students in spreading the awareness. West Bengal Education Department has now decided to inculcate this into the syllabus.
The daily curriculum of a student in India, and especially in the state of West Bengal is now bound to see significant changes. The importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle is to be well taught to the students, in order to address this rampant underlying health issue.
According to a senior official of the WB Education Dept, the whole course covers all the sections of students. Starting with the primary level, for which funds have already been disbursed. To engage most of the students in understanding and getting educated on this issue, Theoretical Knowledge is combined meticulously with Practical Application.
The desperate need for Physical Activity, regular health checkups, getting our measurements taken and examined and eating a healthy balanced diet. To achieve this, not only the students are the main focus, but also the teachers who are to teach them are educated as well.
Methods and ways to impart various modes of exercise preferably Yoga will be duly induced into the daily curriculum of both the students as well as the teachers. In the words of the official," The lessons will help explain the necessity of regularly monitoring certain parameters like blood pressure, blood sugar and body weight".
Talkin about the whole plan, he says, "The first two factors i.e. BP and Blood Sugar, have an intimate relation with obesity. All these will be examined in the curriculum to raise the awareness level of the students, which will eventually help their parents know about the basic things about obesity".
