After Gujrat banned the consumption, storage and the use of alcohol, strong outrage and criticism have followed; but what else is followed is the appreciation by those who have had been victims of the aftereffects of overuse of the same. But there always have been arguments contrary to any prevailing change. And in this case, it is the willingness to drink alcohol and the idea of having the maturity to understand the limitations of its quantity. But the prevailing laws do not see ideas and arguments but its respect. One such case has happened in Surat.
21 women were consuming alcohol in a kitty party held in a hotel in Surat, Gujrat. Police received a tip of the same -reportedly by a person in the hotel and raided for the same. Reportedly, the hotel manager shall pay some fine or will be imprisoned for allowing the consumption of alcohol in his place. He might have or might not have known of the same, but punishment surely would not hear his arguments.
After being caught red-handedly ladies were taken to New Civil Hospital (NCH) for some medical examinations and were released to go home until the next morning when they were taken to the police station for further proceedings. Four empty bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) were found in the place. Women who have not had consumed alcohol too shall bear consequences.
The punishment of the violation of Gujarat Prohibition Act that prohibits the storage, consumption, and sale of alcoholic beverages, can be one to three months of jail and a fine of Rs. 200-Rs. 500 respectively. Justice J B Pardiwala earlier has sparked controversies by commenting against the implementation of the act.
“One may not find an open bar on a public street, but the number of cases, as on date, pending in different courts in the state of Gujarat, bears eloquent testimony to the fact that either the policy is not effective or something is wrong with the implementation of the law,” he had said.
