Dosa Plaza, an Rs.30 Crore Franchise has a huge story behind it. The founder Prem Ganapathy started off with just a Rs.1,000. He was a Class 10 pass out with no proper skill set to get into any job. Nothing much on his mind, nothing much in his pockets and with minimal education he could have not gone far. But, the Zeal to achieve something made wonders.
Talking to The Economic Times, Mr Prem has revealed his early struggles. He was shuffling between several jobs, earning about Rs. 250 by the end of the month. All of which was sent to his native village of Nagalapuram in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin District, where his parents and seven siblings reside. The responsibilities did not allow him to pursue his studies.
When he was only 17 years old, Prem left to Mumbai, where a friend offered him an Rs. 1,200 salaried job. Even though the number is more, Prem had to send all of it back home. At some point in his life, he had no money and no place to live too. He hoped for better days and stayed there in an unknown land.
The initial jobs were washing dishes, odd jobs at restaurants and bakeries etc just to save all the money he has got. As his initial jobs were all around restaurants and food businesses, with his two years of savings he managed to open his own small venture.
That small shop which he had set up at a local train station, started off well. It was getting the boom of Mumbai and so he brought two of his brothers in it. The reason for the boom was his recipes and delicacies. They were of his village origin and people of Bandra just could not get enough of them, hot and soft idlis and dosas.
The small venture turned out big, with a monthly Rs.20,000 turn-out. Then they have made it a bigger place with store made ingredients like masalas and condiments. There were youngsters who introduced him to the internet, and he then surveyed through the immense information and has created tens of new dosa varieties. 26 innovative and equally tasty dosas by the end of their first year.
After repeated attempts for a stall in the nearby mall, the mall accepted his appeals. His first Franchise was set up in 2003, at Wonder Mall in Thane with several collabs. That small stall is now 70 outlets in number, spread across counties like New Zealand, Dubai and Oman. He did not turn back, faced the difficulties and now is very successful.
