Ghoramara Island in Sunderban is witnessing an enormous rise in seawater and residents fear the disappearance of the life there.
Reportedly, the 4.6 square km island has disappeared almost half over past two decades. The Island is situated on Sundarbans delta, Bay of Bengal. The Island has been a home to over 7,000 but now serves almost only 4,000 people. According to Business Insider, Sunderbans has been a home to endangered tigers, dolphins, crocodiles and 300 species of bird.
It is indeed very clear that the island is disappearing and the lives of residents are not safe, and therefore the government of West Bengal has relocated almost 10,000 people to other neighboring islands. “Those who have money can cross the sea. Those who don’t, wait like us to get drowned. Even if we get to the mainland, we remain refugees with no homes, no identity and no community. We are simply losing the battle,” a resident of the island claimed in an interview with Firstpost. The man also claimed that her daughter had to quit school because all the teachers had left the island.
Sagar Island is coming as a savior to most people who wish to leave the cruel place, but there still are many who wish not to abandon their motherland.
