The country of Indonesia witnesses a Tsunami. This was triggered by an underwater volcanic eruption of the volcano named Anak Krakatau. 222 are feared dead and more than 800 injured. The Tsunami struck along the lines of the Sunda Strait with Java and Sumatran Islands in its purview. The huge wave was unprecedented which has destroyed the homes of thousands, leaving them stranded and lost.
The disaster mitigation agency officials have said that the numbers of missing people might be much more. Heavy damage has been reported by the agency where thousands were forced to evacuate to higher grounds for safety. This had to be done with a heavy heart as they had to leave behind everything they had.
Homes, belongings, clothes, essentials, valuables, everything was left out and people had to rush to safety. There were instances where family members were left behind. And many went missing in the huge wave that flushed the people of their lives within seconds.
The Indonesian island nation is in the path of the Geological 'Ring Of Fire', which is the super active volcanic and earthquake ring in the Pacific Ocean. All the countries which fall under this ring have been hit drastically by many earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and Tsunamis.
The day of 22nd December 2018, had the Archipelago Nation meet with successive hits of Natural Disasters. Earlier to this, there were earthquakes at parts of the island, and a combination of an Earthquake-Tsunami also hit the nation in the month of October.
The officials have since then kept warning the people to stay away from beaches till the end of December. The warning from an official from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) ha said, "Those who have evacuated, please do not return yet".
Indonesian President Joko Widodo who will be running re-election in April 2019, Tweeted saying that he had, " ordered all relevant government agencies to immediately take emergency response steps, find victims and care for the injured".
Rescue operations are finding it hard to reach the trapped victims as there were blocked by the debris of buildings and houses. A famous local rock band, which were performing on the beach of a tourist island, was also washed away. Few of its band members are feared dead, and some of their family members missing.
The coastal residents reported that there were no warning signals from the officials nor there were any warning signs from the ocean. But other places have reported having sirened with warning signals. The active volcano was seen spilling lava and ashes for quite some time before the officials warned and had erupted fully on Dec 22, 2018.
