Ambassador car, back in the days, and even now is the symbol of India. Many of us remember having been riding in an Ambassador when we were children. Towelled seats, a mini fan at the driver's side, no division at the front driver's seat, sturdy engine, and a suave it carries while on the Indian roads. It is proudly named as 'Hindusthan Ambassador' due to its signature nature with the Indian nation.
Manufactured by the Hindustan Motors till the year of 2014, Ambassador is truly the 'King of Indian Roads'. Every VIP Authority of India had a sturdy Pearl White Ambassador with the 'Red Beacon Light' atop it. The generation of today surely does not know this importance as these vehicles are now replaced.
The very first move to make Indigenously made Automobile in the 1950s was done with the production of this car. The sense of authority it holds over the roads comes with a spacious inside, a rare feature in those times. This car surely had bigger personalities ride it, but it was very much familiar to the common household as well.
There were times when people would make fun of it stating that, 'Even a kid can repair this car'. Yes, that is how it is made, to withstand any major damages and be very user-friendly in its maintenance. The car had a Turbocharged, inter-cooled, grand Isuzu Engine.
Former Late PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee ditched the Ambassador car, often called as the defeatless 'White Elephant', for a BMW, in the year 2003. It is from then, the Pride of Ambassador, which carried the major leaders changed and went down to commoners.
From then, the supremacy of the 'Raja of the Rastha' moved aside for more pocket-friendly cars by the company Maruti. Manageable household favouring cars by Maruti came up very soon, increased in numbers, and the King was seen very less often. Restricted to only a few who loved it dearly.
To cope with the various upcoming and emerging cars and companies in India, the Hindustan Company tried to Rebrand the car, with an in-season name, 'Amby'. But, it did not do well. In the year 2014, they have officially stopped Manufacturing the car in total.
Ambassador is now Vintage and a collectable.
