The sources of the knowledge of our history come in many forms. The writs and books are one part and the excavated items are another. Be it the work of an Archaeologist or a Historian, getting to know our ancient history is an interesting aspect. Harappan site in the state of Haryana, Rakhigarhi, had archaeologists from both India and South Korea dig up a grave with a buried couple.
Out of the 62 unearthed graves in recent times, only in a very few occasions, more than one skeleton was found. And in only this one particular grave, the skeletons of two people of the opposite sex was found. The researchers on examining the two conclude that they might have been of a married couple, buried about 4,700 years ago.
The couple is estimated to be buried almost at the same time or even perhaps together. The Vice-Chancellor of the Deccan University and the research head group, Dr Vasant Shinde says, "The man was about 35 years old and the woman, about 22 years old when they were buried".
Furthermore, on observations, he says, "We saw no signs of lesion or injury on either of the skeletons, which led us to conclude that they died of natural causes and were not killed—at least violently. The man was about 5 feet 6 inches tall while the woman’s height was 5 feet 2 inches, quite healthy at the time of their death".
The researchers believe that the deaths of the two people were due to any heart condition or brain damage and not a cause of murder or force. No force and buried together with all the pots and pans, with complete ritual practice, indicate that the couple were married.
Looking at the items buried with them, the couple is estimated to be from a Middle-class family of that times. And the sacred institution of Marriage would have originated from India's Harappan Civilization aka Indus Valley Civilization.
