Johnson & Johnson's company is known for making Baby friendly products of personal hygiene. They have a huge base spread all over the world. Originally an American Multi-national company, it also produces medical devices and pharmaceuticals along with consumer packaged products. The company was founded in the year 1886. The services and products of which are utilised by over 175 countries worldwide.
The well-known products and companies are also part of this brand; such as Band-Aid Brand line of bandages, Tylenol medications, Johnson's baby products, Neutrogena skin and beauty products, Clean & Clear facial wash and Acuvue contact lenses. Out of which, the sub-company that is making news is Johnson's Baby Products.
In a statement made by the company itself, they have given the information that there were visits from authorities. The visits so came as there was an investigation launched on the J & J products by regulators in India. The seven-decade-long Indian side of the establishment is alleged to have cancer-causing asbestos in its products.
Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) along with State-based Food and Drug Administrations (FDA) have visited the manufacturing units. They have collected samples of J & J Talcum Powder for babies. They were to be taken to the authorized laboratories for further testing.
"The characterization of these visits as 'raids' or 'seizures' is incorrect as has been reported in some instances. The tests have been conducted in the regular way that the FDA collects samples", said the J & J statement. The company also added that the products they manufacture were based on "a long history of safe use and decades of research and clinical evidence reviewed across the world".
The accusation of having a cancer-causing substance in its products the company said, "We have scientific evidence to prove that our talcum powder is safe and beneficial to use. We unequivocally stand by the safety of our products are fully compliant with regulatory standards and requirements in India and will continue to work with the regulatory authorities".
In the past, similar checkups have been done by the two authorities and they have confirmed that its products, "comply with Indian Standards and are free of Asbestos". The officials have taken samples from nine Indian cities, namely; Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Indore, Chandigarh and Ghaziabad.
The officials suggested the company not to use raw materials until the test is done. The test which would take time in giving the reports is done extensively as Asbestos can exist in traces as well. "Testing for asbestos is not a routine procedure. It might be in traces. It will require us to develop a method and all those things", said one official.
