'Nari Shakti' the Hindi word translates to 'Women Power', is made the Hindi word of the year for 2018 by the Oxford Dictionaries. It was announced on the eve of a Literature festival held at Jaipur. The word itself holds a position close to a separate domain. It was also the main topic at a panel discussion at the literature festival. Every year the words and phrases are selected which 'attract a great deal of attention and reflects the ethos, mood, or preoccupations'.
As said above the word literally means, 'Women Power' and it is the power which is acquired by women working on themselves, by themselves taking control of their own lives, living on their own terms. Strong, independent and not weak anymore.
The word and the topic of discussion involved the role of the government and the Hindi language speakers in moving ahead in aiding the women to rein in the mainstream. The efforts of the Central Government in the inclusion of women and the promotion of inclusive development is the highlight of the discussion.
"This has led to new initiatives being established, existing laws being revised, and the championing of the #MeToo campaign which helped facilitate women's rights and empowerment across all areas of Indian society", said the press release from the literature festival.
On the occasion of International Women's Day, the Central Government in the month of March and year 2018, have recognised some "exceptional achievement by women". On obtaining due recognition the women of the nation were booted with much valour. They were also awarded 'Nari Shakti Puraskar Award', 'Women Power Award'.
The Supreme Court's recent rulings and verdicts on Triple Talaq and the entry of women into the Sabarimala temple have opened up many avenues to women and were the symbolic representations of progressive society. These were the actions that have increased the momentum for the word, 'Nari Shakti'.
The initiatives Beti Bachao Beti Padao and the increased range of centres to 200 for aiding women who are faced with violence were among the top changes made in 2018. According to a lawyer at Oxford Ms Kriti Agrawal, "Nari Shakti is representative of the courage that women derived and the feeling of sisterhood which was stronger than ever before".
