Under the name, 'Rest Of My Family' the duo of Akshatha Shetty and Piyush Goswami have left their monotonous corporate life and have been on the go in search of Art and Philosophy of life. They have been doing this since 2013. It is then when they have sold their stable belongings and started living life on wheels.
The duo was initially into Professional photography and journalism. It is then they had to travel to places, remote villages and meet new people every time. Every time they had to meet a new family to document them, there was enlightenment arising in the duo.
Sharing about the realisation journey they say, " The more we travelled and met new people, the more our social walls melted away. Over time, fear and suspicion were replaced with love and trust. We realised that everyone we met and lived with was a part of our own family. And, when someone is part of your family, just writing about their challenges and needs isn’t enough. You have to try your best to find a solution to these challenges".
After such an incident they have decided to go on a year-long journey just documenting and helping the ones in need as per their capacitance. But for this one year trip, they needed the assistance of crowdfunding. " Throughout the drive, we documented various communities and issues across six states...We have also covered the issue of human trafficking and other challenges..."
It is all these struggles and aiding on one side, and the new program of having a Document of the lost tunes of the human tribe on the other. Named as 'The Forgotten Songs Collective', this has taken form in 2018. It is a musical collaboration in its experimental stages by an electronic musician.
An artist under the Artist Connect Programme will also be travelling with the duo apart from helping the duo in their philosophical journey. It is then this artist would document the folklore of the remote villages which would create a true way to celebrate the untapped tunes of India.
The TFSC aims at connecting the woods with the wifi world. Not depreciating the origins, but getting them their true recognition. Audios and visual tribal performances very interwoven in our Indian culture and were underappreciated for over several decades.
" In all our years of travelling and working, we have constantly felt that folk and tribal music of India has been largely ignored and is underrepresented. These obscure music forms and songs have such unique imprints of history, culture, identity and life struggles of their respective communities".
After the duo encountered a man from an old Assam tribe, who was elated after talking about his long lost tribe they had got this idea of a TFSC program. The man along with his mother started singing their folk songs which were kept under the stone for decades. They even cried while singing, as these songs were close to their hearts and were never asked by someone.
Starting with the Biate Tribe, this project will be having its other versions with Bonda and Gond tribes as well.
