A Woman from the Northern part of Ireland had a plastic tablet packet in her throat for 17 long days. The 40-year-old woman was suffering from constant throat discomfort. She had visited a hospital four times but still, they could not detect the plastic piece in her throat. Doctors found the strip after four visits to the hospital and after conducting many different tests.
The woman was a normal person with no instability of mind. She was fit and well for her age, but accidentally swallowed the "original foil packet" of a painkiller. At first, she went to the Emergency unit of a nearby hospital with a condition stating, "a foreign body throat sensation". The first visit after she swallows it.
The woman approached the hospital complaining about discomfort and difficulty in swallowing. The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) team checked her only on these three aspects. She was able to drink liquids, she was breathing very fine and she could even move her neck in a normal way without any difficulty.
After examining the woman in these three aspects and she seemed normal, they sent her away. A second visit, where she underwent a Chest and Neck X-ray, did not show any strip or plastic piece. They thought that she swallowed it completely and had caused an injury in the throat and that injury is troubling her.
After three days, she comes for a third visit still experiencing pain. The doctors give her painkillers, pain relievers and even steroids for 48 hours. The pain was relieved and she was discharged. After five days, she came for a Fourth visit, had an X-ray, the results were normal and so she left.
It is then she took an Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) Scan. This scan examines inside the body, from the throat to the stomach and the starting of the large intestine. A tube with a camera and a light is inserted into the mouth and examined. Then they found out the plastic strip in her throat and then safely removed it.
She shockingly says, "I had no idea I swallowed this. It was a very frightening three weeks and I couldn't believe it when I saw the picture".
