Electricity to run the irrigational facilities in the fields is often associated with diesel-powered motors and generators making a loud noise, huge mess and a lot of pollution even in the open farms of the green village. This was and is the norm in many of the villages in the agricultural nation that is India. The government's providing the farmers with much-needed electricity to run their machines if not enough this is what farmers can opt for.

A village named Dhundi in the Kheda District of the state of Gujarat was relying on either general supply of electricity or diesel-run generators to run their motors until three years ago. But, when the villagers and the farmers were made to be familiarised with Solar Electricity, they have changed their farming techniques.
The village of Dhundi is so remote that they are not even connected to the power grid of the state. So Diesel generators were their only source of electricity. The moment these villagers came across Solar energy they have been optimally utilising this energy very efficiently.

A cheaper, noise-free, pollutionless form of electricity is now being produced by themselves. This way they are sufficiently irrigating their farms, using it for domestic use and the surplus production is also being sold to Gujarat's power distribution company named, Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Ltd.

The solar energy conversion panels and equipment were all sponsored together by International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and Sir Ratan Tata Trust under the IWMI's Tata Water Policy Research Program. The farmers are now no more polluting the air, but utilising the Sun's immense heat energy.

Before the farmers were aware of this Solar Energy resource, they used about 50 diesel generators for all the electric pumps to their farms. Talking about this improvement a consultant at the IWMI says, " Now, the farmers and their families have not only got rid of the noise, diesel fumes and spending on diesel but are also selling solar energy worth thousands".

Champaben, a lady from the village proudly expresses by saying, " Today, our village is free of noise because there are no diesel generators. It is a big relief".
