Our modern homes are now being equipped with open Kitchens and our malls are with vending machines. But this small village named Azhikode in the state of Kerala has a shopkeeper less shop. Modern in thinking, native in origin and great in their cause. The shop is open and the items are on open display. There is a box with a lock to drop in the amount by the customers.
This improved arrangement is at a coastal village near Kannur. Opened on the 1st of January of 2019, this is a 'Self Service Shop'. Pioneered and established by a local NGO named 'Janashakti Charitable Trust', which works for the welfare and development of Differently-abled persons.
The shop has many various varieties of items, owned by four differently-abled people of the region. They are the students of Asraya Special school in Kannur. This shop of supplies earns up to a Rs 1,000 per day. Products ranging from bathing soaps, disinfectants, washing powders to cloth bags, stationery, candles etc are sold here.
The payment for the products is done at the delivery itself. This is done in order not to affect the four individuals of any low sales. To get in touch with the Trust or provide any form of aid, you can reach out to Sugunan at 9446161616.

The self-service shop has a board displayed which says, " This shop has no shop keeper or salespersons. You can pick up what you want, check the price tags and deposit the money in the cash box".
"The shop is opened every day at 6 am by the shopkeeper selling vegetables in the adjacent shop and remains open throughout the day. It shuts down at 10 pm. While we have installed a CCTV camera to prevent any untoward activities, the physical presence and support of nearby shopkeepers have been central for the stall’s success", says the trust founder.
Furthermore, Sugunam PM The convenor of the trust says, " We have been working with the differently-abled community in Azhikode and are very well aware of their lives and struggles. One of our beneficiaries, who is physically impaired from the waist below, used to make utility products and pencils from paper but seldom found buyers".
"And because of his disability, the possibility of marketing or finding bulk orders seemed bleak. We wanted to change that and give a chance to all such enterprising entrepreneurs. That’s how the idea of the self-service shop came up".
