A video is going viral on the internet. Where a teacher from a primary school in the area of Abdullahpur in Bihar's Katihar district was beaten up by people around him for not singing along the hymn 'Vande Mataram'. The matters became even worse as the teacher was of the Muslim faith. The situation happened on the Republic Day that is January 26th but the video surfaced recently.
This brings us to a scenario where people are even thrashed for not singing along. Singing does not equal to being patriotic nor does, not singing equal to disrespectful. The song was definitely known to have been sung during the national movement and it does hold a significance. But, its origin dates back to a much earlier time when Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote this to support a rebellion.
The song was originally meant for a small group of people written in Bengali, which later gained popularity during the National Movement. Did every person involved in the freedom movement sing this song during the fight? Did BR Ambedkar, his supporters and Dalits sing this song along? Did Master Tara Singh and his Sikh followers sing this song?
NO, the above questions have a singular answer, NO. But, does that mean that they were not patriotic? Does that mean that they are disrespecting our nation and being 'Anti-Indian? They collectively did a lot more in those years than what we are doing for our country now.
Singing is surely not equivalent to giving respect, there are Fundamental Duties to look at before singing along a group of people fearing to get beaten if not. True citizen does not involve in propaganda. At first, Vande Mataram was considered as the National Anthem, but when our leaders came to know that it seemed offensive to our Muslim ancestors.
As the main cause and reason for a National Anthem, is to Unify people unlike dividing them, our leaders have changed the National Anthem.
And so as a relief, the residents who have beaten up the teacher did not file any complaint whatsoever. "Had we got any such information, an investigation would have been done. But till now we have not got any such complaint", says the District Education Officer.

'Ahimsa' is the way our leader have followed in order to achieve Independence. With an intention to persuade and encourage people to take up the right path, but not forced into it. Only voluntary action of the people was genuine enough which has got us our Independence.
Upon asking 'why did he not sing along the others?', he says, " We believe in Allah and 'Vande Mataram' is against our belief. The term means 'Vandana' of Bharat Mata, which is not what we believe in. Nowhere in the Constitution is it written that saying 'Vande Mataram' is necessary. I could have lost my life".
