In Tadoba forest of Maharashtra, a Buddhist monk is killed by a leopard. Reportedly, the 35-year-old monk was meditating under a forest when the incident took place. As per Gajendra Narwane, deputy director of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, the incident occurred around 9:30am-10am on December 11 when the monk was meditating under a tree deep inside the forest.
The deceased monk was identified as Rahul Walke. Reportedly, two monks used to visit Walke since last one month. The deputy director of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve claimed that forest officials had warned Walke and other monks of wild animals in the area. As per Narwane, two cages and a camera trap have been set up to capture the leopard.
A fellow monk in an interview with BBC Marathi claimed that he had seen the leopard attacking Walke when he reached the spot provide him food on the next morning. He said he went back to bring people to help Walke but by the time he arrived, it was too late. Reportedly, four more such attacks have happened in the forest within one month.
A senior police officer -Krisna Tiwari told AFP, "His badly mauled body was found further into the forest, indicating the animal tried to drag it along." Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is located in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra and is one of India's oldest and largest National Park.
The forest is spread across 510 miles and is a protected reserve for big cats. The tree under which Walke was meditating is actually not so far from a popular Buddhist temple where the deceased would often go. There live some other monks as well, in the forest who could come out for Walke's help if any such activity was anticipated.
