The difference in earnings in the Paid employment sector and the labour market between men and women is high all over the world. People are protesting and standing up for this Gender Pay Gap. In India, in the year 2013, as per the studies conducted the gap between the earnings of men and women was a whopping 24.81 %. The same study has been done recently and now there is a slight improvement but still, there is a long way to go.
Apart from other countries, the case in India is unique. Women Participation in all sectors of the economy compared to other nations is very low. India ranks at the bottom ten in terms of female participation in the economy. This also is a factor affecting the unequal pay between the two.
According to the recent survey released the Gender Pay Gap has got down to 19 per cent, as the difference, but it is still a huge number. That means, Women doing the same job as Men earn 19% less than them. The study has taken into consideration all the relevant sectors in the economy of India.
Every fact and figure in these said relevant sectors revealed that the wage inequalities between the two genders are working in favour of men. The study here is the Monster Salary index (MSI), which has given the required numbers.
In the year 2018, the same Index survey showed a median Gross Hourly Salary for Men in India at Rs 242.49, while for Women it was at Rs 196.3. Detailing various sectors and the range of gaps Women experience, the Index lists them out as how much more the Men get than Women in the same sector.
Shockingly, the more of years as Experience attracts more gender wage gap than lesser numbers. For example, Men with more than 10 years of experience in their field are being paid 15% more than Women of the same years of Experience.
The MSI is an initiative by Monster India working in collaboration with Paycheck.in and IIM Ahmedabad acting as a partner for research. The discrimination at work is what we must first look into. About 46% of women feel that employers feel that Maternity would lead to a perception that they would quit. And that they as a parent can't put the same number of hours with the same dedication as that of a man.
