The 93-year-old former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had been admitted to the AIIMS hospital in New Delhi for the past few weeks, died today (Thursday) at 05:05 pm. A Hindu nationalist from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Vajpayee had been hospitalized since June with a kidney infection and chest congestion.
Reports emerged on Thursday morning that Vajpayee was in a critical condition and was put on a life-support system. The doctors stated that the death came after a long spell of illness. This is the saddest day not just for his BJP and its members, but also for the whole nation. He was one of the most revered leaders across the political spectrum in India.
Vajpayee served as India's Prime Minister for 3 times in his political career. In 1996, he has become Prime Minister of India for the first time and the tenure lasted only for 13 days. In 1998, Vajpayee became PM for the second time and this time he served for 11 months. And this (3rd) time, he became a full-time PM from 1999 to 2004.
Mr. Vajpayee was the first BJP leader to be sworn-in as the prime minister and the first non-Congress PM to complete the five-year term. Born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior, Mr. Vajpayee was elected 10 times to the Lok Sabha from four different States.
Vajpayee’s first exposure to politics came as early as in 1942 when the British government arrested him for 23 days for participating in Quit Indian Movement. When the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) was banned, Mr. Vajpayee took the charge to revive the organization. Along with Deendayal Upadhyay, he formed a right-wing political party “Bharatiya Jan Sangh”, which later became Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on April 6, 1980.
He was a prominent member of the Indian Parliament for over 4 decades, being elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house, ten times, and twice to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house. He served as the Member of Parliament for Lucknow, UP until 2009 when he called it quits from politics owing to health concerns.
Above all, he was a good human, a great poet, and an orator as well. He was well liked by party men and was even respected by his opponents. With all qualities, he carved out a reputation for himself as a true gentleman. Mr. Vajpayee was conferred India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, by the President of India in 2014. It was officially declared by the Modi government in 2014 that Vajpayee’s birthday on December 25 would be remembered as Good Governance Day.
