The criminalization of politics that benefit from each other is a patronage India does not benefit from. The nexus between politicians and criminals to exchange Money and Power leads to mutual benefit and public exploitation.
In a recent event, lawyer and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), on the cases pending. The PIL focusses especially on the Criminal MP's and MLA's both present serving and former.
On the request, Supreme Court has listed out nearly 4,000 cases against Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assemblies and ministers. The cases were judged a 'stay' in their respective High Courts. Some of them which were even decades older.
A special bench headed by Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi will be taking up these cases. The apex court requested a detailed thorough report on the cases pending and on the stay. A separate mechanism of coordinating with the High Courts to set up adequate courts for easy solving is planned.
The compiled data has in it, 264 cases under stay by the respective High Courts. And several others which were pending since 1991, were not even moved forward to charging the accused. The Supreme Cort has ordered for special multiple courts to try these cases on a prompt basis.
Let us see for ourselves, how many of these legislators would be prosecuted for their crimes. If everything is carried out in a perfect manner, we can expect all the existing politicians behind bars. Hope this will clean the political slates.
Criminals to be weeded out
On thorough inspection of the data of Past Three General Elections, it is concluded that the candidates with a criminal record are three times more likely to win the election, than a "clean" candidate. The linkage would provide for Vote bank policy and a climate for convenient political crime. In a recent event, lawyer and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), on the cases pending.
