Buddhism is the fourth largest religion in the world, with about 520 million followers called the Buddhists. India is its origin and it emerged as the teachings of the Buddha in the Ancient era. Various regional interpretations have come up ever since. The latest one being the Tibetan Buddhism, with Dalai Lamas as its important monks. Mostly they are the representation of the Sectoral Variation.
The present Dalai Lama is the 14th one, who has recently visited India. Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya district of the state Bihar is where the great Buddha is said to have attained Enlightenment. The Bodhi Tree under which, Buddha meditated profusely, an incident which happened 2000 years ago is still preached.
It is at this Mahabodhi temple, within a few metres from the Bodhi Tree, the 14th Dalai Lama prays along with his followers, all from a secured iron curtain. There is another preaching by another varied sect of the religion inside the temple. The prayers are being said for the 17th Title of the Karma Kagyu School.
The 14th Dalai Lama must reincarnate, otherwise, this 17th Title head will become the head of the Tibetan School. In a discreet interview with the media, the 84-year-old spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama spoke these words. He was very gentle and so frail, yet very attentive and very much alert.
The interview had a wide range of topics from political to spiritual issues. Talking about his health, Dalai Lama says, "Quite good, not very good, for an 84-year-old person, quite good. I go for morning walks in Dharamshala also. Here I take around 600 steps each morning in the monastery".
Furthermore, talking about the people of Tibet, who are under stress regarding the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution he says, "It should be decided in a free country, not in Tibet, where there is no freedom". When there was a demand to shift the schedule of the "Thank You India" event in New Delhi to Dharamshala, back in the month of April, this was Dalai Lama's response to it.
" The Indian Government tried to avoid any obstacle to their relations with China. That is understandable...Basically, our relations with India are centuries old...in the 8th Century. My body is Tibetan but spiritually and mentally I am an Indian. Today 10,000 monks and now nuns are studying in Nalanda Buddhist Traditions with total freedom and not under any restricted environment in Tibet".
