Arguably, one of the world's busiest transports -Indian Railways has immense popularity among citizens. It surely is the first choice of most of the Indians when it comes to travelling through states. But almost always, one has to reserve his seat a week or more before. And those who don't, often fall under the Waitlisted or RAC Ticket Holders category. They often have to cancel immediate plans if there comes no confirmation for their seat. And confirmation seldom happens.
Indian Railways has now implemented a change that can give the Waitlisted and RAC ticket holders, with confirmed births. The railways will soon introduce a tablet to Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) to help them update new records. The tablets will be called Hand-Held Terminals and will help to update the number of seats available as soon as TTEs confirm the vacancies.
The Financial Express quoted, "The idea is simple – once a train leaves its originating destination, the TTE will check tickets and in case a reserved berth or seat is found to be vacant, he will update the status on his HHT device. This HHT device will relay real-time information to the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) through GPRS and the vacant berth will be allotted to waitlisted passengers on subsequent stations. This would help Indian Railways better utilise its capacity in case a passenger fails to board the train or cancel his/her ticket before the preparation of the chart."
Reportedly, the tablets will be introduced first to Shatabdi Express and Rajdhani Express trains and soon shall be provided to TTEs of others trains as well. A senior official in the rail ministry stated, "According to the new feature of waitlist prediction, one can predict the chances of a waitlisted or a RAC ticket getting confirmed on the basis of booking trends. We will mine our own data of passenger operations and booking patterns for the first time."
