United Nations Organisation is an intergovernmental organisation, established for the main cause of maintaining peace and harmony in the world. The cooperation between the nations to have a secure and friendly neighbourhood is its main motto. In a recent debate in the UN General assembly on sanctioning peace in the Taliban influenced Afghanistan, UN's failure was deeply criticized. Indian Representative Eenam Gambhir led the words of criticism.
The Taliban were initially protestors, later have formed a government and now are an insurgency. War stricken nation with citizens feeling unsafe in their own mother country is what is resulted now. In the debate on Afghanistan Insurgents are not in a mood to peace talks. Their methods always seem inclined towards war.
The Counsellor in India's Permanent Mission to the UN Eenam Gambhir said this at the general assembly, "The goalposts for them have changed. The terrorists and their supporters have now set up industries amongst them of narcotics and illegal mining in the territories they control stealing the resources of the Afghan people and to fund more violence and terrorism".
In a recent Global Terrorism Index released, Afghanistan had occupied the first position. It is thus named as the most dangerous country to live in. With 25% of World Terror related deaths occurring in the country. Its people, however, are having hopes for a better life, looking for changes and aspiring for a better future.
Severely criticizing the UN's inability to deal with such an issue, she went on to say, " Despite these challenges, the UN has not demonstrated the resolve to deal with the source of the problem. The Security Council sanctions committee, which refuses to designate new leaders of the Taliban or to freeze the assets of the slain leader of Taliban, is falling short of what is expected of it by the Afghans and the International community".
Talking about the people of the nation, she says, " Democracy in Afghanistan is taking deeper roots". Reminding us World citizens and World leaders about the earlier Taliban attacks, she says, "From the lessons from the past, we who are located in New York, are aware that peace in Afghanistan is tied to the peace and security in the entire world".
