Prabhu Ramamoorthy a 35-year-old native of Tamil Nadu was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment after he 'sexually assaulted' a fellow woman passenger on a flight. The flight was a commercial flight, with cramped and tight places to sit. The woman who was seated next to him was filmed lewdly and touched inappropriately during a night flight. The man who came to the United States on an H-1B Visa in the year 2015, will soon be deported.
On the charges of a "Brazen Sexual Assault", he was arrested and sentenced to 9 years at the Federal Court in Detroit. The Indian National was under no remorse on such a shameful incident he has caused. The woman was a foreign national whose flight experience has turned sour.
The Judge who gave the verdict on this regard, hopes for scaring and intimidating others who think of doing so to others. Judge Terrance Berge has rightly said a lot of things in his verdict, putting in mind the statistics and carefree attitude of assaulters.
The federal prosecutors who were arguing in favour of the woman are fighting for a two-year extension to the jail sentence and making it a 11-year imprisonment. The absolute right thing done by the lawyers, not taking sides with the assaulter even by professionalism.
Another US Attorney named Matthew, says, "Everyone has the right to be secure and safe when they travel on aeroplanes. We will not tolerate the behaviour of anyone, who takes advantage of victims who are in a vulnerable position. We appreciate the victim in this case for her courage to speak out".
The man was travelling along with his wife. He was seated next to another woman passenger whom he digitally penetrated her. Waking up to the horror of unbuttoned and unzipped pants, the woman immediately alerted the cabin crew. The flight attendants were helpful in the matter.
Timothy R Slater, Special Agent in Charge, Detroit Division of the FBI has given us the facts and figures of similar assaults by Indian Men. There were many cases where assaulters are arrested. The serious offence of misbehaving with a co-passenger is seeing growing violations in recent times.
In the years 2014-2017 itself, there was a 66 per cent rise in mid-air offences. An FBI report on this matter states, "cramped, confined spaces, alcohol and drugs, fewer flight attendants, and dark cabins on night flights" are the factors that are "likely to embolden offenders".
The confined places make the victims even more offended as they feel more helpless, vulnerable and powerless. Often feeling intimidated to act or to say anything on the attack. But eventually speaking up for themselves and against the perpetrator is the right thing to do.
