Japan, a country with a population of 127 million is the world's tenth most populated island country in the Pacific Ocean. With dense cities, mountain ranges, monasteries and national parks. It also has volcanoes, tsunamis, and earthquakes in plenty. The year 2018 has not been friendly to the small people filled nation. The month of January started with heavy snowfall, followed by volcanic eruptions and accidental fire breakouts.
The pop music loving nation has declared 2018 as a 'Disaster' year, even giving it a symbol of 'Disaster'. Japan thus picks the Chinese character for 'Disaster' as its 'defining symbol' for the year 2018. Deadly floods, earthquakes and severe storms hit the nation in all its months without any proper recovery time.
Their 'Kanji' symbol is inked at the Kyoto Temple. This event is broadcasted on all Japanese Channels as it is an annual event, marking labels to each of them. Master of the Ancient Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto, Master Seihan Mori does the honours of writing the character on live television.
The Character is written on a huge white panel using Calligraphy Ink and Calligraphy Brush. The traditional technique of the Japanese does not seem to have been forgotten. There would be a public voting system, to select the symbol for the year. At every year's end, the public would vote for one symbol which they feel is apt to the year's news and happenings.
Keeping in mind all the happenings of 12 months, this selection is done by the public. Out of 1,93,214 votes registered, 20,858, i.e. the maximum, have chosen 'disaster' as their selection. To which the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation, the organisation which conducts the event says, "Many people experienced the threat of natural disasters such as earthquakes, heavy rain, typhoons and heatwaves", to be the reason for selection.
Last year, 2017, the symbol was, "North" for 'a series of North Korean Missile Launches'. The previous year, 2016, had the "Gold" symbol for the success of Japanese Participants in Rio Olympics. Japan uses, Chinese Characters or Kanji, along with other types of Alphabets.
