Over the recent years, we have heard about mob lynching cases and many murders, that caused due to fake news spread on social media platforms -especially WhatsApp. Anyone could use the platforms wrong, by posting innocents' photograph mentioning them as criminals; and results have had been disastrous. Government and police officers have been found repeating again and again not to believe every news without having complete knowledge of the subject still all in vain. WhatsApp too -in its recent updates- have enabled the feature that let people forward a message to a maximum of 5 people in one go.
Meanwhile, government schools in Kerala have taken the matters into own hands by undertaking to educate the students on how to spot fake news. In the Kannur city of Kerala, the government has introduced classes to identify fake news in around 150 government-run schools. The motive is to teach them to cross-check and verify what is wrong and what is otherwise.
The beginning of this change has been named Satyameva Jayate (truth alone triumphs) and is sparking headlines for almost every state. “It is basically a training program for students to inculcate certain characteristics in them, to impart certain values in them. We want to encourage them to be more sceptic about the kind of information which is available on the internet and how to differentiate between what is true, what is false” said Mir Mohammed Ali -District collector of Kannur in an interview with The Logical Indian.
“They are asked to check for the source of the information. Students are also encouraged to politely ask the sender for the source of information. If the sender fails to furnish this information, we ask the students to find out the correct information and post it there. This way at least in that space we are able to tackle fake news.” he continued.
