A World Health Organisation report on Indian Mental Health Cases states that there are about 43 Government Hospitals dealing with mental health issues. For every 1 million people there are only 3 Psychiatrists and even lesser Psychologists. But, on a daily basis, the patients are growing in huge numbers.
This particular aspect of health issue does not have much awareness in the Indian nation. Any misconduct or any vivid difference in mental ability is often linked to being possessed or under the influence of black magic. This scenario is especially rooted in the village level issue.
The mental health issue does not only revolve around the patient but also has the community and surroundings in its circle. Lack of proper knowledge of the prevailing health hazard is not a feasible situation. On the rising cases of mental health issues in India, the Central Government has passed a law in 2017, Mental Health Care Act.
After a year of the existence of the law, an official government body is set up to monitor the cases. It is recently constituted by the Centre, named as, Central Mental Health Authority (CMHA) to regulate and observe all the mental health institutions in the country.
The newly constituted body is open for including, mental health caregivers, service users, mental health professionals and all the related NGOs working for the same cause, as its members. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in the year 2012, have made up its mind to renew then existing mental health act. Upon great study and survey, they have finally made the required changes in the act.
World level organisation UNO and its United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons With Disabilities has set up rules on this matter. The rules and working of similar organisations in the countries should always be in sync with the UNC.
The CMHA will be soon followed by the State Mental Health Authority (SMHA) and Mental Health Review Boards. Together their role is to,
Aiming at decreasing the suffering and disability and including them in the mainstream. And also making the general public aware of the Health Issue as a Health Issue.
