Noida police have conducted a massive raid in their area at a call centre. On December 21st, about 126 members were arrested from a fake call centre running in Noida. It was alleged that they were extorting money from US Citizens. Few targetted innocent and naive US Citizens were being duped of USD 3500 each by scaring them of their Social Security Number being faulty. Also giving them a relief measure through paying some money, they were duped.
Intimidating the citizens of an alleged FBI arrest if they did not correct the issue with their nine-digit unique Social Security number, these fake call centres encashed the fear. The raid was a 17-hour long one, with questioning and arresting the call centre members. It is believed that all of them were engineering graduates.
The police also seized around 321 computers and a cash worth Rs 20 Lakh was retrieved. Gautam Budh Nagar Superintendent of Police, Ajay Pal Sharma gave the media the way they used to dupe the US Nationals. Posing as Officials from the Social Security Department, speaking to them in an American Accent, the process would start.
Using the Truecaller app, the names and details of naive citizens were collected. Voicemails were sent to these numbers in the form of a warning or a notice format. If the callers call back, then the members are all ready to execute their process.
Telling the callers that their Unique Social Security Number is stolen and there are chances of its misuse. If not corrected soon then the FBI will be initiated to make an arrest. To avoid this, a penalty amount of money is to be paid. This payment is asked to be made through the purchase of 'Playstore Cards'.
Next step is, these cards are then cashed by the Call Centre owners with the help of their aides in Dubai, China and the US itself. the officer who was leading the investigation said, " The call centre would make USD 50,000 every night on an average by duping gullible Americans".
The whole operation of raiding and arresting the perpetrators was done after a tip-off from the FBI. With whom the Noida Police were working together by being in constant contact. Not only our Indians are being fooled, but even the foreign nationals are also falling prey to duping.
