Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister of India three times. Two times for a brief period of time and from the years 1999 to 2004 for a full five-year term. He was the first ever Prime minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to have served a full term in the era of Prime Ministers from Indian National Congress. He was an active member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha till the year 2009, after which he quit politics citing health reasons.
On August 16th of 2018, Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away at the age of 93 years with age-related issues. Vajpayee breathed his last at the Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS). Few days before his birth anniversary which falls on December 25th, the day of Christmas is being commemorated. Also celebrated as "Good Governance Day".
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the Rs 100 memorial coin honouring the Ex-Prime Minister. Mr Vajpayee had during his term at the office has travelled by bus to Pakistan through Lahore, to talk to Pakistan's then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, for friendly ties with Pakistan.
At the inaugural honorary ceremony, Prime Minister Modi says, "Atal Ji wanted Democracy to be supreme. He built the Jana Sangh. But, when the time came to rescue our democracy he and others went to Janata Party. Likewise, when the choice was between remaining in power or compromising on ideology, he left the Janata Party and formed the BJP".
Modi Ji also highlighted the importance and the speciality of Vajpayee Ji. He says that 'Vajpayee as a speaker was unmatched by his peers and contemporaries'. In his very words, Modi Ji says, " When he spoke, the nation spoke...when he spoke the nation listened".
Talking about the ambitious nature of the leader, Modi Ji says that Atal Bihari Vajpayee never compromised on his ideology and the nation's need and interest. "While for some, power is oxygen and they cannot live without it. But, Vajpayee Ji spent a long part of his career in the opposition benches raising issues of National Interest".
The small party with a founder with a big vision for which he had worked very hard had resulted in a party that is one of the biggest in the nation. "Atalji Built brick by brick" to make his vision a reality, that is shining now.
