A helicopter was struck in heavy snow at an altitude of 18,000 feet from the sea level. It was stuck on a mountain of snow at the Siachen Glacier front in Jammu and Kashmir. The Army which was always stationed at the second largest glacier of the non-snowing areas of the world. The point where the tussled, 'Line of Control' between Pakistan and India, ends here. Indian Army has at this altitude rescued a stuck helicopter.
The team of pilots and technicians were all involved in recovering the air vehicle together were able to set a World Record of rescue operations. With the help of the infantry troops present there, the helicopter was brought down to the Siachen Glacier Basecamp. A safe place compared tot he high altitude.
Army sources have revealed the whole ordeal in the recovery of the Helicopter. The helicopter was not a civilian one but was the property of the Army of India. It was an ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter) Dhruv. As a routine patrolling duty, the helicopter set off to examine the 74-km long Siachen Glacier border.
The chopper developed a slight hindrance in its functioning. So the pilot decided to halt it on the mountain for a while to do the checkup. It was landed at a noted post named Khanda in the month of January 2018. At such an altitude, the snow happens to be very soft. But, the pilots managed to land safely.
Due to the technical difficulty, the helicopter was not landed on the Helipad nearby but was made to land directly on the snow at a flat surface. Initial landing was all set. The pilots got down and started examining the snag. They decided to station their tent there and stay overnight.
The excessive snow and winds at that altitude disturbed the soft snow under the Helicopter and it tilted and fell on its side. Since then, many attempts have been made to recover the Helicopter. Efforts were all gone in vain till the month of July 2018.
In the month of July, the technicians and pilots have managed to replace the faulty parts of the Helicopter with new ones. The Leh base camp could achieve this, then the chopper was then shifted to the Siachen Basecamp. Only a few countries in the World operate at such high altitudes, and it is sort of a World Record.
Former Air Marshal had this to say, "I know the pilots and technicians who were involved in this operation. Knowing these people as I have headed this Army Aviation Corps for a couple of years, all I can say is that nothing is impossible for these men from Indian Army".
