The depressed world now has one more thing adding to its sadness. Air Pollution. Not the usual health issues, breathing problems, no Oxygen to breathe etc stuff here. Air pollution levels are now said to be even affecting The State of Mind. The intensity of one's Happiness is affected by the surrounding pollution levels. A study was done by the Chinese using an App of their own similar to Twitter named ' Sina Weibo ' a Microblogging site.
The makers of the app have studied the posts of the users and indexed them into happy and sad. While many users were thus being constantly studied, on the backhand the researchers have even related this data to the air quality index of those areas.
After studying many such blogs, they were able to make a pattern and connect the dots. This connection has provided them with a real-time on-going connection between Air quality and the state of Happiness. No one but 144 similar micro-blogging sites have been thoroughly studied by the researchers.
The outcomes of this showed that Self-declared and Self-claimed happiness by the users was less on the days with more air pollution in their areas. Lower happiness states with days of relatively higher pollution levels. Further research has confirmed that continuous exposure to polluted air can be detrimental to the behaviours of the people.
The study stops here, but it does not tell us Why this is happening. This would need a much more in-depth approach. Apart from the usual health hazards, it poses to the physical self, the mental effects are rounded off to just estimations as of now.
Some possible reasons that were rounded off are the change in the sense of smell, taste and the increased haze that would cause Anxiety and innate phobia amongst the people. Cognitive Impairment developed due to this Air Pollution is already been backed by several studies, but this effect on Mental Health is a new one to be tapped and examined into.
