1995, January 31st, The Toss that won Zimbabwe their first ever win in a Test Match. It was a regular match of Test variety that had its way of the '90s. The match was between the robust Pakistan team and the 11th time Test playing nation Zimbabwe. The win for the busty Pak players was guaranteed. The match was at Harare, Zimbabwe. The captains of both the teams Saleem Malik and Andy Flower along with West Indian legend Jackie Hendriks were at the centre of the ground for commencing the match.
Surrounded by media and all eyes were on the three men at the centre of the pitch. They were there to perform a coin-toss. The home side captain Andy Flower did the honours of flipping the coin first. It was a usual coin-toss but our Pakistani captain had m=turned the events so swiftly.
The coin used here was of Zimbabwean currency which has their National bird 'Eagle' on one of its sides. The usual choice was Heads or Tails, but Malik had other things in mind. When Andy tossed the coin in the air, Malik shouted, "Bird". And the coin fell on its bird side. Andy accepted the toss and was in agreement.
But, the Legend knew a lot than the two captains here. He got what happened there and did not fall for this. The trick was on the Pakistan Captain now. Hendricks, the legend opted for a re-toss stating very clearly that he did not hear the initial call for the first toss.
Crest-fallen Malik could not easily go with this. The re-toss was in favour of the Zimbabwean team, who went on to chose to first use the wicket. This was later seen to be much beneficial to the Zimbabwean team. They had done exceptionally well and had gone to win the innings against the rough Pakistan team.
