General Bipin Rawat is the 27th Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. He assumed office on 31 December 2016 after retirement of General Dalbir Singh. Bipin Rawat was born in Pauri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand, India. His family had been serving in the Indian Army for multiple generations, and his father was Lieutenant General Laxman Singh Rawat. Rawat attended Cambrian Hall School, Dehradun, St Edward’s School Shimla, National Defence Academy Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, where he was awarded the 'Sword of Honour'.
He is also a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and the Higher Command Course at Fort Leavenworth, United States. He has a MPhil in Defence Studies from Madras University, a Diploma in Management and another in Computer Studies. In 2011, he was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy by Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut for his research on military-media strategic studies.
General Bipin Rawat, who is on a four-day official visit to the United States, was accorded a military ceremony upon his return to the college in Fort Leavenworth, from where he graduated in 1997. Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat will proceed on his five-day maiden visit to the US from April 1. This comes at a time when both India and the US are have jointly been tackling terrorist activities from Pakistan. Army officials said General Bipin Rawat will meet his American counterpart and discuss ways to further strengthen cooperation in countering terrorism from Pakistan. During the visit, General Bipin Rawat is expected to discuss the security situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan and about the current tension between india and pakistan.

The Additional Directorate General of Public Information tweeted “General Bipin Rawat #COAS in an impressive military ceremony has been inducted into the prestigious International Hall of Fame at the Command & General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth. #COAS is an alumnus of the College having graduated in 1997,”
The United States Embassy in India hailed it as a “great day” for the armies of both India and US, and tweeted, “A great day for the #USArmy and the #IndianArmy.
