Priya Punia, the 22-year-old opening batswoman earned a national call for the upcoming 2019 India's T20. Hailing from Jaipur, Rajasthan, Priya did full justice to her father's efforts of constructing cricket ground for her practice. The Indian team which is set to tour New Zealand in February 2019, will now include Priya Punia as well. The father of the player, Surendra Punia was ecstatic that it was his unachieved dream to get a national call for himself.
Talking about the national selection into the team, Priya Punia's father says that he was very keen to strive for achieving his unachieved dream of playing for the country, in any form possible. In an earlier media appearance regarding the construction of the ground, Priya was asked about the positive outcome of the Ground.
About the decision of her father in building a cricket ground for her, and what it would lead to, she replied by saying, "I hope something he can be proud of". This reply now became a reality, when she got selected for the national team. Her father Surendra has sold his property, sought the help of loans and bought a 1.5-bigha plot.
The plot is located in the outskirts of the Jaipur city, which was bought for Rs 22 Lakh in the year 2010. Initially, the father of the player thought of constructing a sports complex for the Badminton Sport. As Priya was not showing much interest in Badminton but was more inclined towards cricket, he changed the plans and set up the pitch and nets for her practice.
The young player plays for the Delhi Team in the Domestic circuit. After a great domestic season in the year 2015, she expected a call-up the same year. She was not called up, but she did not lose hope but continued to score tons in the game becoming one of the leading run-getters in the past two seasons.
Talking to the Times Of India, Priya says, "I was sure of getting selected then. I was disappointed, but I did not give up. I knew my time would come. I expected a place in the ODI squad, but I will take whatever opportunity had been handed to me. I expect to do well in the international arena".
