We have heard of listened to stories of blunders and mistakes that sound silly but make impacts in the doer's life. Whether be it a video leak online or a fake rumour, businesses have faced consequences after silly mistakes. Huawei has always been a symbol of class and standard and seems like there is space for mistakes but not for mistake doers in the market. Recently, Huawei took it to Twitter to wish its users a happy new year but they did not know that their simple tweet might spark headlines controversies and impact business.
The organisation had tweeted, "Happy #2019 from all of us at Huawei. Our resolution this new year is to give you more reasons to connect to those you care about." The tweet was all good but what created the blunder was the signature 'via Twitter for iPhone.' The incident surely made those at Apple happy but Huawei was trolled badly online.
Two employees who caused the blunder have been demoted by the organisation. The tweet was immediately removed and deleted from Twitter but what remained were the screenshots. In an internal Huawei memo, senior vice-president and director of the board Chen Lifang said, "the incident caused damage to the Huawei brand." "The mistake occurred when outsourced social media handler Sapient experienced "VPN problems" with a desktop computer so used an iPhone with a roaming SIM card in order to send the message on time at midnight."
Employees have been demoted by one rank and their monthly salaries are reduced by 5,000 yuan that makes around 50,769.11 Indian rupees. The organisation has also frozen the pay rank of its digital marketing director for 12 months. Huawei has also blamed an agency it hired to handle social media overseas. "Employees must now tighten management of suppliers and partners. The incident exposed flaws in our processes and management,” they said further in the memo.
